The Umbwe route is known for being the shortest, steepest, and toughest route up Kilimanjaro. It's a challenging climb. On the first day, you'll encounter some very steep trails. Many tour companies switch to the Machame route on the second night, camping at Barranco.

DAY 1
The night before trekking, the guest will meet a lead guide who will provide a briefing and inspect all the necessities for successful summiting including gears this will be done to the respective hotel KEYS HOTEL after that you will agree for the next day departure time to the gate

From Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

How to Dress
As you embark on this leg of your journey, be prepared for damp and muddy conditions. Gaiters and trekking poles will prove invaluable. opt for shorts and t-shirts, but keep your rain gear and warmer clothing easily accessible.
The day begins after breakfast, departing Moshi at 9 AM. After a drive of XX minutes, we reach the Umbwe Gate on the southern glacier and western breach side of Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival, we register with the national park and commence our hike promptly at 9 AM. The trail leads us upward along a ridge nestled between two deep valleys, weaving through dense montane forest. Our camp awaits amidst towering trees and lush undergrowth.
While there is no water source at this camp, our dedicated porters will ensure an ample supply for your needs. Enjoy evening snacks followed by a hearty dinner prepared by our skilled
DAY 2
From Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp
Elevation: 2940m to 3900m
Distance: 6 km
Hiking time: 4-5 hours
Vegetation: moorland
Recommended gears
As you ascend beyond 3000m, temperatures drop and conditions become chillier and more damp. Dressing appropriately is key to conserving energy. Long underwear paired with hiking pants, liner gloves, and a sturdy jacket will suffice until summit day. Keep your rain gear accessible at all times.
The trail becomes steeper on this section, transitioning out of the forest along the Umbwe ridge before gently descending to Barranco camp nestled in the valley. Here, you'll encounter fellow trekkers from the Machame and Lemosho routes, making for a bustling atmosphere at the campsite.
After a well-deserved dinner, it's time to rest and recharge for the adventures that lie ahead.

DAY 3
From Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Altitude: 3900m to 3995m
Distance: 6 km
Trekking Time: 3-4 hours
Vegetation: Alpine Desert
Dressing Guide
Continue dressing warmly with layers, including long underwear, hiking pants, liner gloves, and a proper jacket. Keep rain gear in your day bag. Expect cold nights.
Day's Journey
After breakfast, ascend a steep ridge, passing the Barranco Wall. Enjoy a well-earned lunch break at Karanga Camp, offering fantastic views of Barafu and Mount Meru. Continue across ridges and valleys to Karanga Valley campsite. End the day with dinner before resting for the next day. This shorter day is intended for acclimatization.

DAY 4
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 3995m to 4673m
Distance: 4 km
Trekking time: 3-4 hours
Vegetations: Alpine Desert
Recommended gear
As we approach 4000m, ensure you're well-covered to conserve energy. Wear long underwear, hiking pants, liner gloves, and a sturdy jacket. Keep your rain gear handy. Prepare for a cold night as temperatures drop below freezing.
After breakfast, we depart Karanga and continue upward to Barafu camp. Here, we complete the Southern Circuit, offering various angles of the summit. We set up camp, enjoy an early dinner, and ready ourselves for summit day. Barafu Camp provides stunning views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

SUMMIT DAY - PHASE 1:
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak
Elevation: 4673m to 5895m
Distance: 5 km
Trekking time: 7-8 hours
Vegetations: alpine glacier
Recommended gears
During the ascent to the summit, temperatures range from -10 to -20 degrees Celsius. Dress in multiple layers, including a jacket, ski trousers, gaiters, a warm hat, and a balaclava. A head lump is essential for the night climb.
In the early hours of the mid night around 11:30pm
we bundle up and begin our climb to the summit. Heading northwest, we ascend through heavy scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. At Stella Point (5756m), we rest briefly and witness a breathtaking sunrise. From Stella Point, it's just an hour to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Faster hikers may catch the sunrise from the summit. SUMMIT DAY - PART 2
Uhuru Peak to High camp
Elevation: 5895m to 3900
Distance: 12 km
Trekking time: 5-6 hours
Vegetations: Heath moorland
After reaching the summit, we descend straight to Mweka Hut campsite, stopping at Barafu for lunch. High Camp is nestled in the upper forest. Later, we enjoy our final dinner on the mountain and a well-deserved rest.
DAY 6
High camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 3900m to 1860m
Distance: 13.7 km
Trekking time: 3-4 hours
Vegetations: Forest
Recommended wear
As you descend, temperatures rise. Start the day with layers you can remove as needed.
After breakfast
we continue our descent to Mweka Park Gate. All hikers must sign in to receive certificates of completion from the National Park. Those reaching Stella’s Point (5756m) receive green certificates, while those reaching Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates. After signing, we share a final meal with the team and possibly provide tips. Then, we drive back to the hotel in Moshi for well-deserved showers and celebrations.
